The new D4 DSLR from Nikon is a professional model which comes with a 16MP sensor, a processing engine EXPEED 3, an auto-focus module called Multi-CAM 3500FX, a metering sensor with 91k pixels, plus a body made from magnesium alloy which is weather sealed. This DSLR can record 1080p movies, at a speed of 24 to 30 fps, but it can also record 60 fps 720p videos if needed. There are headphone and mike jacks included, plus a HDMI port, so you can stream video to a monitor.

The D4 comes with a shutter that is reinforced with Kevlar, being rated for up to 400,000 actuations. The camera can shoot photos at full resolution, at speeds of 11 fps when needed. There is also a buffer that was expanded, card slots for XQD and CF cards, rear joysticks which can be used for quick auto focus selection, LiveView capture modes, a Virtual Horizon with dual-axis, an LCD of 3.2 inches and a focusing screen that is new.

The battery which comes with this camera is a new En-EL18 model, the camera has its own Ethernet port and it can get an IP address of its own, in order to be operated remotely, via the Internet, or by using a smartphone, tablet or PC. The price of the Nikon D4 is somewhere around $6000 for the body.

The model that the D4 replaces, the D3, was hugely popular with wildlife photographers, sports photographers and photojournalists, thanks to superb performances and its capabilities during low light conditions. The D4 is just as big as the model it replaces, but despite that, it’s a model that has a good weight distribution and well though ergonomics, so the weight doesn’t bother you as much as you would imagine. The experience of shooting pictures with the D4 is better than before.

Image quality

While the D3S which was the previous model came with a 12MP sensor and managed to offer stunning pictures, the D4 comes with 16MP, which a lot of people feared that it would impact the quality of the photos. Despite the growth in MP, the quality of the images wasn’t impacted in a negative way. In the other areas of image quality, the D4 does very well, giving you great looking colours, superb tonality, plus a wide dynamic range. You will be quite satisfied with the HDR capture mode, the Active D-lighting and the Vignette Control. It also did very well during tests done at night.

The D4 feels like a camera that is responsive and very well built, reacting in an instant when you want to use it. It will start-up extremely fast, you will not notice shutter lag, plus you get quick focusing as well if you have a good lens on it. You’re getting a rugged camera if you buy this model, with superb ergonomics. It’s a camera which can be heavily customized, so you can make it work just the way you like it. This model also has a live view mode that is silent, so it’s a bonus for photojournalists.
